Paramedic Training

This course prepares the student to deliver emergency care to acutely ill and injured patients. The program includes a review of normal human structure and function and the elements of many common emergent conditions. Students will learn physical assessment and history taking, pharmacology including the mechanism of action, metabolism, and excretion of medications, electrophysiology of the heart and other topics. This course teaches the student important field clinical skills including endotracheal intubation, intravenous line placement, EKG interpretation, defibrillation, the safe administration of emergency medications, and more. The student will be required to complete specified lab and simulation exercises throughout the course in addition to hospital clinical rotations and a field internship program. ACLS and PALS certification are offered during the course. Students who successfully complete this program will be eligible to challenge the National Registry certification examination for Paramedic. One (1) NREMT exam voucher will be provided to all successful graduates.

Course Content

The LSTI Paramedic Program is offered an average 4 times per year; these courses are split between our Southfield and Taylor campuses. The lecture and lab courses run 44 weeks, meeting twice a week, including 2 weeks of Capstone. Students enrolled in our Paramedic program are required to complete 648 hours of classroom training in addition to State requirements for at least 500 total hours of clinical experience comprised of a minimum 250 hours of hospital clinicals and 250 hours of EMS field experience/internship. Program specifics will be discussed during the orientation process. Cognitive and psychomotor testing is required to demonstrate competency to challenge the NREMT exam.

Prerequisites:

Must be a state licensed EMT or AEMT (proof of which must be submitted with registration). ** If not, please refer back to our EMT program and we will get you started on your pathway to becoming a Paramedic!
Current BLS for Healthcare Provider Card

Students are required to obtain immunizations and other testing as required in accordance with OSHA regulations of proof of their prior administration.

Physical exam showing good heath

Current Tdap vaccine
Negative TB within two (2) months of starting the course

Description

The purpose of this course is to train EMT’s and AEMT’s to provide a full scope of advanced life support procedures to critically ill and injured patients. This course is designed to help the student develop a higher understanding of human anatomy and physiology, disease pathology, advanced airway management, pharmacology, IV therapy, cardiology and trauma care.

Payment Policy:	Payments for services rendered at LSTI will be consistent with current LSTI Financial Policy. The LSTI Payment Plan is offered for initial EMS education courses only (MFR, EMT-B, EMT-S, EMT-P and EMT-I/C) and comprises the following: Initial payment of 50% of course fee payable at time of registration. 50% of outstanding balance will be due at the 25% course completion point. Remaining balance will be due at the 50% course completion point. A late payment is defined as a payment received at our business office after the due date. A service fee of $25 will be added to a student’s account for each occurrence of late payments. If payment is more than 15 days late, the student will be placed on administrative suspension from the course until payment is received by our business office. Any students placed on administrative suspension will not be allowed to participate in classroom sessions and will not be allowed to participate in any clinical and/or internship rotations until all balances due are reconciled. All course requirements must still be met to successfully pass the course. A final notice letter will be mailed to the student after payment is late more than 15 days. If a payment is not received within 15 days of being sent a final notice letter, then the student’s account will be sent to a collection agency. Additionally, a $25 service fee will be added for any returned checks. The service fee will be in addition to the late fee.
